Central Substation Project

BWL’s Central Substation at Lansing‘s Scott Park is vital to providing cleaner and more reliable power to the downtown Lansing area. It is the first step in allowing the BWL to retire the coal-fired Eckert Power Station in 2020.

About the project

The Central Substation will replace the Eckert Substation which currently serves more than one-third of BWL’s electric customers. Spreading the load carried by the Eckert Substation among other substations will help guard against widespread outages. The Central Substation will also include equipment that uses modern technology which will help to restore power faster when outages occur.

In addition, the Central Substation Project will also create several new and improved recreational uses and will provide greater access and visibility to the renovated Scott Park site.
